Homegrown celery has a lively, vibrant flavor that makes grocery store celery seem bland and watery in comparison. It takes 80 days to reach maturity and is very cold tolerant. I have successfully overwintered full celery plants in my greenhouse, and hope to try a different overwintering technique this year. I read on a gardening blog that one can cut the plant completely back in the fall, transplant it into a large pot, and store it in cold but not freezing conditions until spring. In the spring, the celery plant can be transplanted back into the garden. The blog writer said that she had kept the same plant going for 9 seasons with this method.
Celery is an unfussy vegetable to grow. It likes fertile, evenly watered soil and full sun.
